KINGSTON, Ont. - The third place Centennial College Colts certainly made the Vikings women's basketball team earn their 10th consecutive victory, and seventh consecutive home victory on Saturday afternoon.
The Vikings had to battle for a full 40 minutes against the Colts in the 72-54 victory. The win improves SLC's record to 15-1 to clinch first overall in the OCAA East Division.
"This was a good game for us, as we head into playoffs. Centennial is a strong team that made us work for a win today," said Vikings head coach Remy Simpson.
It was a perfect game for the Vikings to end the regular season, as they will be heavily contested against at the 2014-15 OCAA provincial championship in two weeks.
SLC was in control in the first half, but the Colts were keeping them in check, not allowing the score to get out of reach. Centennial utilized their ball movement to get good looks at the net.
The Vikings made sure to capitalize on their eight steals in the first half, earning two points off each opportunity. Towards the end of the half, SLC pulled away from Centennial with an eight-point lead, their largest margin of the game.
It was a total team effort from the Vikings in the second half, with 14 steals coming from seven SLC players. Combined with the strong play of Alexis Lough, Becky Orr and Hannah Koposhynska under the glass, combining for eight rebounds, and 22 points, the Colts struggled to get much going in the half.
Prior to tip-off, both Lacey Knox and Hannah Koposhynska were honored as graduating student-athletes, having reached five years of eligibility this season. Knox and Koposhynska led the Vikings, finishing with 14 and 12 points each.
The Vikings finished the season first overall in the OCAA East and have earned a bye directly into the OCAA provincial championship taking place at Centennial College from March 5-7.
