STRONG CROSS COUNTRY EFFORT BY MOHAWK

ANCASTER, Ont. - Oct. 26 is the day the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association Cross Country Championships will be held in Ancaster and it's evident that Mohawk's runners find the course to their liking.

It was quite the dress rehearsal for the Mountaineers in an invitational event staged by Redeemer on Saturday (Sept. 28).

The Mohawk men's team finished in a virtual tie for top spot in Humber, but officially had to settle for second place because their average time was slightly slower than that of the Hawks contingent.

Mountaineers coach Andre Simon termed it a breakthrough race for his men, as Jessie Wilcox finished in fifth place, timed in 30:32 for eight kilometres. Kevin Patterson was seventh in 30:48, Hassan Ishaq took eighth in 30:49 and Bradley Wilcox clocked 31:48, good for 19th place.

Other men's results included Ryan Gagnon (29th - 33:43), Johannes Louw (38th - 34:52), Riley Kolisnyk (43rd - 35:32) and Aaron Downie (67th - 40:17).

Kiley Olesky of Fleming won, timed in 28:17.

The Mohawk women were led by Aimee Large, who finished 14th in 24:01. Ashley Dewitt was 21st in 24:48 and Kassandra O'Reilly finished 32nd in 26:02.

Courtney Brohart of St.Lawrence College in Kingston won the women's individual title, clocked in 21:56 for their 5 km event.

Sault College won the women's team title. Mohawk didn't have enough women's runners for a team result.

Mohawk coach Simon saw his teams' results as excellent. "I couldn't be any prouder of my athletes, male and female, with the effort they gave today," said Simon. "It was a beautiful day at the Ancaster Community Centre with perfect running conditions, but the course proved to be the challenge of the day. (It) ran through the Dundas Valley trails taking the athletes through some of the toughest terrain."
