NORTH BAY, Ont. - They may not have won a medal, but host Canadore finished OCAA provincials with two consecutive wins and its highest finish in women's volleyball.
The Panthers won the consolation final 3-1 (26-24, 25-23, 13-25, 25-20) over Trent in a thriller of a match in front of packed Canadore gym. Both teams exchanged points in the first set, but the turning point was Canadore's nine-point comeback in the second to take a 2-0 lead and control of the match.
"We're used to playing down," said Canadore head coach Stefanie Leblanc. "So when they're down it's almost as if they perform better. We also managed to play well with the lead in the fourth and finished strong."
Caitlin Hebert led the Panther attack with 20 kills. She credits a team effort for the ferocious comeback in the second set.
"It's definitely a mental game at that point. We have drills we do during the season and we have proven ourselves before that we can comeback from bigger deficits. At that point we reenergized ourselves and said 'Let's go!'"
Camille Garzon was named player of the game for Trent. She finished with three service aces and 24 attacks.
