FANSHAWE 3, DURHAM 2
NORTH BAY, Ont. - It was one of the most competitive matches of the tournament and in the end it was Fanshawe who came out on top 3-2 (22-25, 25-18, 24-26, 25-20, 15-5) in the OCAA bronze medal match.
Durham started off the match strong, taking the first set and led the game 2-1 after three. Fanshawe dug in though, rallying to win the fourth and taking care of business in the fifth.
"With a group this young, I would argue that other than Algonquin, we had the toughest route through," said Fanshawe coach Sean Pellow. "First, playing the host team in their gym for game one and then getting the third best team in the country on day two. It took us a little while to get with our emotions today but the girls put it together and put on a good show."
"We really struggled at the beginning put then we pushed through and we finally showed the people what Fanshawe volleyball is all about," explained Carly Nugteren. She received player of the game honours by helping out in the winning cause with 14 kills and three service aces.
Durham had won 14 straight coming into provincials, losing just one match during the regular season. Lords head coach Tony Clarke said both teams fought hard and had to make key adjustments because of injuries.
"We came over some adversity having our main setter out with an injury. The jitters got to our back up setter and then we went with our libero (Camille Lefaive) and she came in and did a fantastic job. I am really proud of my girls."
Fanshawe last won a medal back in 2013, when it took home silver against Humber.
