HANNIMAN NAMED TOP OCAA WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL PLAYER FOR 2014-15
OSHAWA, Ont. - Humber College's Thalia Hanniman (Pembroke, Ont.) was named the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) women's volleyball player of the year in a ceremony held in Burlington, Ont., on Thursday morning as part of the 2015 OCAA Women's Volleyball Championship.
OSHAWA, Ont. - Humber College's Thalia Hanniman (Pembroke, Ont.) was named the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) women's volleyball player of the year in a ceremony held in Burlington, Ont., on Thursday morning as part of the 2015 OCAA Women's Volleyball Championship.
The OCAA west division scoring champion led all OCAA players averaging 4.4 points per set. Hanniman totaled 244 points on 195 kills, 11 blocks and 38 aces for a Humber team that won the OCAA west regional crown with an unblemished 18-0 record. The fourth-year outside is also a Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) all-Canadian, as well as an OCAA west division first-team all-star.
Hannah Campbell (Midland, Ont.) of Georgian College is also a CCAA all-Canadian. The fifth-year middle averaged 3.4 points per set for a club that won the east regional title. Campbell contributed 216 points on 136 kills, 36 service aces and 44 blocks. Campbell is also an east division first-team all-star.
Humber's Brittany Vanderlaan (Stoney Creek, Ont.) is the OCAA overall rookie of the year. The setter contributed 341 assists, an average of 7.26 per set. She also recorded 34 service aces. Also named west division rookie of the year, Gallant is a west first-team all-star and headlines the all-rookie team.
Brittany Coughlin (North Bay, Ont.) of Georgian is the east division rookie of the year. The left side hitter averaged 2.4 points per set totaling 144 points on 117 kills, 21 service aces and six blocks. Coughlin is a member of the east division second-team all-stars and all-rookie team.
Scott Hunt of Sheridan College is the west division coach of the year and is the OCAA nominee for CCAA coach of the year. In his first year with the Bruins, Sheridan saw a nine-win improvement in 2014-15, going 12-6. Sheridan finished in a three-way tie for third in the west standings.
Georgian's Brad Graham is the OCAA east coach of the year. After finishing third in the east region for three straight seasons, Graham pushed his Grizzlies over the top this season, finishing in first place with a 16-2 record. At one point during the regular season, Georgian built an 11-match win streak.
Tina O'Donnell (Scarborough, Ont.) of Seneca College was honoured for her OCAA east region scoring championship. The second-year outside hitter averaged 3.8 points per set, totaling 222 points on 183 kills, 28 service aces and 11 blocks. She was also named an east second-team all-star.
Joining Hanniman and Vanderlaan as west division first-team all-stars are Alley Newman (Kitchener, Ont.) of Humber; Lucy McLay (Stratford, Ont.) of Niagara College; Charlene De Vries (London, Ont.) of Redeemer University College; and Melissa Cappelletti (Cambridge, Ont.) and Dimitra Stathakos (Brampton, Ont.) of Sheridan College.
Along with Campbell, east division first-team all-stars include Caitlin Hebert (North Bay, Ont.) and Brittany MacComish (Kingston, Ont.) of Canadore College; Jessica Broad (Courtice, Ont.) and Alysha Johnson (Brooklin, Ont.) of Durham College; Alexandra Roy (Barrie, Ont.) of Georgian; and Jamie Fryer (Pickering, Ont.) of Trent University.
OCAA West second-team all-stars include Stephanie Bignell (Drayton, Ont.) and Darian Gropp (Kitchener, Ont.) of Fanshawe College; Kelsey Kovar (Stoney Creek, Ont.) of Humber; Nicole Schoonderwoerd (Travistock, Ont.) of Niagara; Curtiss Straatsma (Brampton, Ont.) of Redeemer; Monica Roch (Windsor, Ont.) of St. Clair College; and Jordie Bevan (Oakville, Ont.) of Sheridan.
Joining O'Donnell as OCAA east second-team all-stars are Alixandra Burkart (Kenora, Ont.) of Algonquin College; Kayla Kosturik (North Bay, Ont.) of Canadore; Brittany Coughlin (North Bay, Ont.), Allison Marshall (Orillia, Ont.) and Mackenzie Roy (Barrie, Ont.) of Georgian; and Sarah MacLaren (Renfrew, Ont.) of Trent.
Members of the OCAA all-rookie team include Vanderlaan and Coughlin; Amanda Kring (Capreol, Ont.) of Cambrian College; Abby Crown (North Bay, Ont.) of Canadore; Bailey Davis (Georgetown, Ont.) of Niagara; Shalena Horst (Dutton, Ont.) of St. Clair; and Jessica McDougall (Pickering, Ont.) of Trent.
