FANSHAWE 3, SHERIDAN 0
LONDON, Ont. - On Sunday afternoon, the Fanshawe women's volleyball team (6-1) defeated the Sheridan Bruins (0-6) in three straight sets (25-14, 25-14, 25-21). The No. 15 nationally-ranked Falcons currently sit in second place in the OCAA West Division standings.
The Bruins came to London with only seven players on their roster but looked early to upset the Falcons. Sheridan started the first set on a 4-1 run but the Falcons quickly answered and before long had the lead. Falcons' first-year middle blocker Kaitlyn Seguin was throwing up a big block, causing the Bruins to make a number of hitting errors. Fanshawe won the first set 25-14.
Fanshawe kept rolling in the second with setter Darian Gropp serving up four service aces in the set alone. The Falcons strong serving drove them to the win 25-14. Fanshawe took a quick 7-1 lead in the third set, causing the Bruins to take a timeout. Sheridan tried to make the comeback and was even within one at 19-18 but the aggressive serving of Fanshawe was too much for the Bruins to handle. The Falcons won the set 25-21 and took the three-set victory.
The Falcons combined for 16 service aces in the match as a team, four each coming from Gropp and Seguin. Kaitlyn Kelly led the Falcons overall with 12 points (8 kills, 3 aces, 1 block). Sheridan's Jordie Bevan had 7 points (6 kills, 1 ace) for the Bruins.
Fanshawe heads on the road next week to face the Niagara Knights (4-3). They play on Friday, Nov. 29 at 6 p.m.
