HUMBER ONE WIN AWAY FROM NATIONAL BRONZE MEDAL FINAL
LLOYDMINSTER, Alta. - The Humber Hawks stormed out to a 2-0 set lead against the Columbia Bible College Bearcats and then hung on to win 3-2 in the bronze quarter-final match of the 2013 CCAA Women's Volleyball National Championship presented by Viterra.
LLOYDMINSTER, Alta. - The Humber Hawks stormed out to a 2-0 set lead against the Columbia Bible College Bearcats and then hung on to win 3-2 in the bronze quarter-final match of the 2013 CCAA Women's Volleyball National Championship presented by Viterra.
The first set was a see-saw battle that the Ontario-based Hawks eventually won 28-26. After losing the second set 25-17, the Bearcats clawed their way back into the match with back-to-back 25-22 wins to force the match to a fifth and deciding set.
The fifth set was never close as the Hawks jumped out to an 8-1 lead and went on to defeat their B.C. opponents 15-4.
The 5-foot-8 Deborah Mitchell once again led the Hawks with 18 kills, two more than she tallied in the match against the Lakeland College Rustlers on Friday night. Player of the game Laura Bye was outstanding on defence with 33 digs during the match. Thalia Hanniman was also a difference maker for the Hawks with 9 digs, 7 kills and an ace.
Sharaya Schulte was the player of the game for the Bearcats with 26 digs. Sadie Ball led the team with 14 kills while Jill Ratzlaff had 12 kills plus 11 digs.
With the victory, the Hawks move on to the bronze semi-finals Saturday at 12 p.m. The Bearcats play in the seventh-eighth place game at 4 p.m. Saturday.
