PETERBOROUGH, Ont. - Humber College's Kelly Nyhof was named the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) women's volleyball player of the year for the second straight season in a ceremony held at Trent University on Thursday morning as part of the 2013 OCAA Women's Volleyball Championship.
The OCAA West Division scoring champion led all OCAA players averaging 5.3 points per set. Nyhof totaled 274 points, 199 kills, 43 blocks and 32 aces for a Humber team that won the OCAA West regional crown with an undefeated 18-0 record. The Georgetown, Ont., native is also a Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) all-Canadian, as well as an OCAA West Division first-team all-star.
Former OCAA player of the year Shawna Metcalf (Azilda, Ont.) of Cambrian was also named a CCAA all-Canadian. The fifth-year right side earned the OCAA East scoring championship averaging 5.0 points per set, breaking the OCAA single season record for kills with 270. The old mark of 259 was set by Metcalf in 2009-10. Metcalf set two new OCAA career records as well with 960 kills and 1,239 points. Metcalf is also an East Division first-team all-star.
Nipissing's Christina Caruso (Pickering) is the OCAA overall rookie of the year. Caruso was second in team scoring on the Lakers averaging 2.6 points per set. She totaled 132 points, 102 kills, 25 aces and five blocks. She was also named OCAA West rookie of the year.
