The Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) is proud to announce Steve Vagnini of St. Clair College as the 2025 CCAA Women's Soccer Coach of the Year. Vagnini is recognized for his exceptional leadership, program development, and unwavering commitment to the success of his student-athletes both on and off the field.
Vagnini guided the St. Clair College Saints to an undefeated regular season (7-0-3), capturing first place in the OCAA West Division. The team's defensive structure was a key factor in their success, as they cut goals against from 10 to just five while maintaining an impressive offensive presence with 31 goals scored.
Throughout his tenure, Vagnini has focused on building a culture rooted in accountability, respect, and teamwork. He prioritizes player development across technical, tactical, physical, and psychological dimensions, ensuring his athletes evolve into well-rounded players and individuals. His leadership has helped produce high-achieving student-athletes, including Victoria Walsh, the 2025 OCAA West Player of the Year and CCAA All-Canadian.
Off the field, Vagnini is equally dedicated to academic and personal growth. He meets with players biweekly to discuss academic progress and personal goals, reinforcing the importance of education and character. His philosophy emphasizes that every student-athlete should leave the program as a graduate and a more confident, capable person than when they arrived.
Beyond St. Clair, Vagnini's influence extends across the local soccer community. He regularly hosts and leads practices for club, grade school, and high school teams at the college's facilities, engaging current players to serve as mentors and role models. He also supports the advancement of women in coaching, having mentored female assistant coaches through both the CCAA Female Apprentice Coach Program and the Ontario Coaches Association.
"Steve is an outstanding coach who brings unmatched passion and dedication to every aspect of our program," said Jay Shewfelt, St. Clair College Athletics Director. "He inspires his athletes to reach their full potential, not just as soccer players, but as students and community members. He is truly deserving of this recognition."
With his commitment to excellence and holistic athlete development, Vagnini continues to raise the standard for collegiate soccer coaching in Canada. The CCAA Coach of the Year honours were presented to him at the Women's National Soccer Championships in Red Deer, Alta.
