ALGONQUIN 4, ST. LAWRENCE (K) 0
KINGSTON, Ont. - The St. Lawrence College (SLC) women's soccer team was looking for their first win at home against the 3-0, and 2013-14 Ontario Colleges Athletics Association (OCAA) champion, Algonquin College Thunder on Saturday, Sept. 20.
SLC would take advantage of winning the coin toss and play with the heavy wind gusts (approaching 50 kilometres per hour) at their back. But it would be the Algonquin Thunder that struck first in the 14th minute, on a defensive breakdown that allowed Vanessa Macmillan a clear shot at the net.
With the Algonquin defence playing very physical, the Vikings were unable to gain consistent offensive pressure. The lack of success began to create some frustration for SLC, but the girls continued to battle and force the Thunder into their own end.
In extra time of the first half, Algonquin would be awarded a questionable penalty kick, with Amy Savage making no mistake putting the Thunder up 2-0.
To start the second half, the Vikings appeared to be fouled in the box but with no call being made, the missed opportunity seemed to deflate the Vikings with Algonquin scoring two more goals in the 63rd and 67th minutes.
SLC would tighten up defensively after the two goals, and were able to generate a few scoring chances, including a free kick that just missed from being headed in. That would be as close as the Vikings would get, as they would lose 4-0 to Algonquin.
The Vikings will face the Cambrian College Golden Shield on Sunday, Sept. 21 at 12 p.m. at home. The weather is currently predicting heavy rain and potential for a thunderstorm.
