FANSHAWE 4, CONESTOGA 3 (OT)
LONDON, Ont. - The Fanshawe women's soccer team defeated the Conestoga Condors in overtime by a final score of 4-3. The win moves the Falcons onto the OCAA quarter-finals, where they will face the Seneca Sting.
Fanshawe controlled the ball from the start of the game but couldn't score on a number of early chances. In the 14th minute, on Conestoga's first shot of the game, Olivia Nelles scored after a scramble in front of the Fanshawe net, to give the Condors a 1-0 lead.
In the 22nd minute, Marisa Oliveira sent a corner kick to the back post and Rachel Howe headed the ball into the goal to tie the game. Conestoga's Meagan Longpre gave the Condors the lead again in the 29th minute on a goal in the bottom corner of the net. Fanshawe led 9-4 in shots on goal but went into the half down 2-1.
Fanshawe kept the ball in Conestoga's end of the field for the majority of the second half but again it was the Condors striking first. In the 70th minute, Conestoga added another goal to take a commanding 3-1 with just 20 minutes to play.
Fanshawe wouldn't give up and in the 74th minute, Katie Parker buried one past the Conestoga goalkeeper and into the net to bring the Falcons within one. The comeback continued in the 86th minute when Oliveira set up Parker to tie the game at three with just four minutes to play. Fanshawe has another chance to put the game away in the final minute but the Condors held on and the game went to overtime.
In overtime, Fanshawe and Conestoga had a number of great chances but both goalkeepers came up with some huge saves. With less than a minute left before the game went to a shootout, Oliveira sent a ball past the Conestoga keeper and into the bottom corner, giving the Falcons the lead. Seconds later the game was over, as Fanshawe came back to win by a final score of 4-3.
The Falcons will now move onto the OCAA quarter-finals on Oct. 19 versus the Seneca Sting. The winner of that game will head to the OCAA provincial championship on Oct. 24 at Algonquin College.
