BRAMPTON, Ont. - The Humber Hawks are looking to repeat as Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) women's rugby champions on Sunday, with only the undefeated Fleming Knights standing in the way.
Humber advances to its fifth straight OCAA gold medal match thanks to a 36-19 win over St. Lawrence-Kingston in the semi-finals. First-year fullback Shequeria Hall (Newmarket) scored two tries in the victory.
Three Hawks were among the OCAA's top four in scoring during the regular season. Lauren Congdon's (Mississauga) five tries and 15 converts totaled 55 points; Christina Branch (Oshawa) scored an OCAA-high 10 tries for 50 points; and Cheyenne De Luca (Etobicoke) scored eight tries for 40 points.
Fleming is one win away from a perfect season. The Knights are coming off a 43-32 win over Loyalist in the other semi-final. The two-time reigning OCAA bronze medalists will be playing in their first-ever gold medal match.
Fleming second-year back Kayla Cassibo (Belleville) led all OCAA players with 67 points during the regular season on four tries, 19 converts and three penalty kicks.
The gold medal match takes place at the Brampton Rugby Club.
Across the province, the OCAA bronze medal will also be awarded. St. Lawrence hosts Loyalist in a match between women's rugby programs in search of a first-ever OCAA medal.
Of the two, St. Lawrence has come the closest. The Vikings went to three straight OCAA bronze medal matches between 2011 and 2013, losing all three times. Second-year wing Michelle Harper (Cobourg) scored six tries while adding four converts for 38 points in six regular season matches for St. Lawrence.
The Lancers are this season's Cinderella story, having won just one match during the regular season. It was enough to get into the post-season, however, and Loyalist advanced to the OCAA medal round with a 20-15 win over Conestoga in the OCAA crossovers.
Second-year player Brittney Whiting (Trenton) led all Lancers with seven tries during the regular season.
St. Lawrence hosts the bronze medal match on its Kingston Campus.
