OCAA IN THE KNOW: WOMEN'S RUGBY
Thursday's match between a couple of winless teams may not seem important in the grand scheme of things, but don't tell Mohawk or Seneca.
SOMETHING'S GOTTA GIVE
Thursday's match between a couple of winless teams may not seem important in the grand scheme of things, but don't tell Mohawk or Seneca.
With these clubs meeting in back-to-back matches, it is an opportunity for one of these teams to get back into a playoff position in the west region, or at the very least, get some results in the win column.
Mohawk and Seneca have both lost three straight and have given up close to 200 points to the opposition. Offensively it has been a struggle for both, with second-year player Manon Clarke (Brantford) scoring the lone try for Mohawk in the season opener.
Second-year forward Samantha Van Item (Guelph) is the team leader with seven points for Seneca on two converts and a penalty kick.
THE UNDEFEATED
The Fleming Knights are officially the only undefeated team in the OCAA, and have been impressive in three matches, outscoring the opposition 101-12.
Fleming handed St. Lawrence-Kingston its first loss of the season last weekend in a 36-7 decision on the road. With three wins under its belt, Fleming has the inside track in chasing its second straight regional crown.
Next up for Fleming is a rematch with Algonquin. The Knights defeated the Thunder 21-0 last month on the strength of a try, convert and three penalty kicks by second-year back Kayla Cassibo (Belleville).
Algonquin is still in search of its first win of 2015 after a 20-20 stalemate at Loyalist. Second-year back Melissa Marleau (Cornwall) earned a try, convert and penalty kick in a tying effort.
THANKSGIVING LEFTOVERS
A key showdown in the west region takes place on Tuesday when the Sheridan Bruins tangle with the Conestoga Condors.
These teams met earlier in the season, with Conestoga winning on the road 31-5. Second-year back Kata Nemeth (Kitchener) scored two tries in the victory.
Sheridan has won two straight since this defeat, and may be peaking at the right time. Fourth-year player Khadeshia Thompson (Brampton) has scored five tries to lead the Bruins this season.
With Conestoga, Humber and Sheridan are currently tied atop the west standings with 3-1 marks. The Conestoga-Sheridan winner is all but guaranteed a home crossover match at the end of the month.
