The defending Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) women's rugby champion Humber Hawks begin their title defence on Friday when they host Mohawk in a west region showdown.
PANNING FOR ANOTHER GOLD
The defending Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) women's rugby champion Humber Hawks begin their title defence on Friday when they host Mohawk in a west region showdown.
Humber dominated OCAA play last season with a perfect 6-0-0 regular season record, outscoring the opposition 428-0. The Hawks finally allowed a try to be scored against them in the semifinals, but still defeated Conestoga 41-5. Humber's closest match came in the OCAA championship, when the Hawks outlasted Seneca 19-17.
The Mohawk Mountaineers are coming off a 40-5 loss to Sheridan in the season opener for both teams.
BATTLE OF THE UNDEFEATED
A pair of clubs coming off opening victories meet on Friday with first place in the west region standings on the line.
The Conestoga Condors stunned defending OCAA silver medalist Seneca 42-0 with second-year back Tori Duncan (Waterloo) leading the charge with three tries. Second-year teammate Kata Nemeth (Kitchener) also scored two times.
Sheridan prevailed 40-5 over Mohawk, with a trio of Bruins scoring two tries each. Stormm Cerrelli (Stouffville), Brooke Grant and Khadeshia Thompson (Brampton) all contributed 10 points in the win.
EXPECT A LOT OF JOUSTING
The Fleming Knights, coming off an OCAA bronze medal, make their 2015 regular season debut on Saturday when they host the Loyalist Lancers.
Fleming won the east region last season with a 5-1-0 record, including two victories over Loyalist. The Knights won both matches by a combined score of 67-37.
The Lancers lost 20-12 in their first match of the season against St. Lawrence. Second-year player Brittney Whiting (Trenton) scored a try for Loyalist.
AT LAST
The final team to make their 2015 OCAA debut are the Algonquin Thunder. They play on Sunday at St. Lawrence.
Algonquin finished with a 4-2-0 record last season, but lost the OCAA crossover 24-20 to Conestoga, ending the Thunder's chance of winning a provincial medal on home turf. Algonquin won gold in 2013.
St. Lawrence has an opportunity to move to 2-0-0 atop the east region, coming off its win against Loyalist. Second-year wing Michelle Harper (Cobourg) scored two tries in the victory.
