ST. LAWRENCE (K) 10, SENECA 0
MARKHAM, Ont. - The St. Lawrence College (SLC) women's rugby team shutout the Seneca College Sting on Saturday, Nov. 2, 10-0, in the Ontario Colleges Athletics Association playoff (OCAA) crossover game.
The victory secures SLC a spot in the semi-finals against the high-powered Algonquin College Thunder on Saturday, Nov. 9 in Ottawa.
The Vikings came into the game as underdogs, finishing the regular season fourth overall in the OCAA East Division with a 2-3-1 record and 12 points. Meanwhile, the Sting was able to finish the regular season with a second place finish in the OCAA West Division with a 4-2 record.
"The whole team put in 110 percent effort, they played like losing was not an option they were willing to accept and played a remarkable game," said Vikings head coach Gary Peacock.
With the game being scoreless through the first half, the Vikings stepped up their play offensively, with Adriana Oliveira and Juletta Cull each scoring one try.
With still 20 minutes remaining in the game, there was lots of time for a Sting comeback. But the Vikings defence held strong, fighting off four strong Seneca attacks to preserve the win.
With teams extending their seasons, the weather conditions start to become less ideal for playing rugby. This proved true in Saturday's match as the Vikings and Sting played their game in cold temperatures, high winds, with a light rain.
"For the second straight game, the girls played in very sloppy conditions, but they did not let that effect their game. It was truly a team effort today," Gary added.
In the 2012-13 season, SLC faced Seneca in the OCAA bronze medal game and fell 17-7.
As mentioned above, the Vikings will face the 6-0 Algonquin College Thunder in Ottawa on Saturday, Nov. 9 at 12 p.m., in the OCAA semi-final.
Should the Vikings upset the Thunder, they will advance to the gold medal game, and will face the winner between Humber and Fleming College. If SLC loses to Algonquin, they will player the loser between Humber and Fleming for the bronze medal.
