CONESTOGA 21, SHERIDAN 11
OAKVILLE, Ont. - The Sheridan Bruins women's rugby team (1-3 OCAA) put forth a good team effort, but turnovers would cost them in the return leg of their home-and-home against Conestoga, falling 21-11.
"We were prepared a little bit better for them, and the intensity was a lot better right from the opening kick off," Sheridan head coach Matt Piemontese said. "Our defensive effort was much much improved, we moved the ball really well, [but] it seemed like at the most inopportune time we turned the ball over when we had good flow going."
After Conestoga staked themselves to an early 7-0 lead, Shannon Paterson connected on a penalty kick nearing the end of half to get the Lady Bruins on the board, narrowing the margin to 7-3 at the break.
Early in the second half, the Double-Blue were making progress offensively, nearly earning themselves a try to even the playing field.
But Conestoga forced the turnover and, thanks partly to a pair of long runs that gashed the Sheridan defence, gained ground nearing the Sheridan line and would earn their second try and conversion, raising the score to 14-3.
Meghan Sowsun would answer back scoring the Lady Bruins first try of the match, pulling them within six, even though the conversion attempt was unsuccessful.
That would be as close as the homeside would get though, as Conestoga would break out with another run up the field late in the second and were able to touch it down under the bars.
Paterson would add points on another penalty kick for Sheridan, to pull within 10, down 21-11.
Conestoga re-applied pressure in the final moments in the game in pursuit of a fourth try, but the Sheridan backline held up.
The game wraps up the home portion of the schedule for the Lady Bruins, as they will next make a trip to Humber on Oct. 16.
