FLEMING 70, ST. LAWRENCE (K) 5
PETERBOROUGH, Ont. - Both the women's and men's St. Lawrence College rugby teams travelled to Fleming College for their fifth Ontario Colleges Athletics Association (OCAA) regular season game.
Both teams entered their games with 2-2 records, and were looking to gain critical points to keep pace in the competitive OCAA East Division, where team standings fluctuate on a weekly basis.
The Vikings women's team approached the game against the 2-2 Fleming Knights as a great opportunity to gain additional points on the Knights in the East Division standings. However, Fleming would utilize home field advantage and a depleted Vikings roster (due to injury) to defeat SLC 70-5.
Mariah Patrick would score the lone try for SLC in the final minute of play.
"Playing a game with a short bench proved to be the deciding factor in Saturday's game," said Vikings head coach Gary Peacock.
"But the girls deserve lot's of credit for playing hard throughout the entire game, despite being under constant pressure by Fleming."
With the Fleming men's team in second place in the OCAA East, the Vikings men's squad knew they were going to have to battle hard to pull off an upset win. SLC would keep pace with the Knights for most of the game, putting up 19 points against a tight defensive team. But Fleming proved to be too much for SLC in the end, winning 37-19.
Nicholas Taylor, Corey Fryer and Nathan Lappan scored tries for the Vikings. Lappan also kicked two successful converts to record seven points in the game. The man of the match for the Vikings was Jack McCleery.
"It was definitely a better team effort than our last game, but with some errors being made at key moments of the game, it was hard to bring the score back within reach," said SLC men's head coach Brad Greenwood.
Vikings women's rugby will host the 0-5 Loyalist College Lancers on Saturday, Oct. 26 at 12 p.m. The men's team will host the Trent University Excalibur on Saturday at 2 p.m. Both games are the final regular season game for both teams.
