SENECA 25, CONESTOGA 0
MARKHAM, Ont. - Looking to build off an impressive 37-7 win in their season opener, the Seneca Sting took to the Markham Campus Field for their home opener on Sunday afternoon. The Sting were the superior team on the field for the entire 80 minutes, culminating in a 25-0 shutout victory over the visiting Conestoga Condors.
The Sting had five players each score a try, but failed on all five of the converts due to field position, a wet field and windy conditions.
Seneca took the opening kick and drove the Condors back toward their goal line. Playing with just 14 players and no substitutions, the Condors were at a disadvantage from the outset trying to stop the Sting on the first day of autumn. Chantell Rowan (Waterloo), while dragging a defender, crossed the goal line for the first score of the game and a 5-0 Sting lead.
Conestoga showed some fight as they looked to answer the Sting's early score, driving deep into Seneca territory. A loose ball picked up by Shellee Meigs (Owen Sound) allowed the Sting to momentarily halt the pressure from the Condors as Meigs kicked the ball away from the Sting goal line. The Condors continued to attack, trying to cross the goal line, but were unable to as the first half came to a conclusion.
A team meeting at halftime yielded a more inspired Sting team in the second half. Samantha Malm (Courtice) scored in the half's opening minutes on a strong push by the Seneca team, pushing the Condors back across the goal line for a 10-0 lead.
Seneca went on the offensive once again as Katelyn Carey (Burlington) and Kimmee Meigs (Owen Sound) helped set up the Sting deep in the Conestoga defensive zone following long runs by each. Jennifer Wedlock (Richmond Hill) followed by powering across the goal line for another Sting try.
One of the more exciting moments of the match occurred on the Sting's fourth try. Ana Mandache-Dinca (Toronto) took a pass just inside the left sideline and sprinted down the field from her own side of half, leaving defenders behind before arcing to the middle of the uprights for the try.
Carey, a 2012 OCAA league all-star, completed the scoring with a try in the right corner as she dragged two Condors tacklers across the goal line.
The Sting are back in action on Saturday as they travel to Sheridan at 10 a.m. The Condors will travel to Humber for a 4:30 p.m. start on Friday.
