OAKVILLE, Ont. - The Sheridan Bruins rugby program continues to
build a rock-solid foundation in preparation for its first season
in the fall of 2012. Matt Piemontese and
Michael Curran, both cornerstone's of the Peel
Rugby community, have agreed to co-coach the Lady Bruins beginning
this September.
"I'm extremely happy to have Matt and Michael on board with us,"
athletic director Jim Flack said. "The ability to
attain success on the field as a team while achieving in the
classroom individually is the core principle that drives our
varsity programming. The fact that they understand both sides of
that coin intimately made them natural selections to lead the
women's rugby program."
Piemontese, a long-time teacher at Philip Pocock Secondary School
in Mississauga, has a long and storied career as a player and
coach.
He played for the York Yeomen in the late 1970s, and then coached
at Oakwood Collegiate and Pocock throughout the last 30 years.
Presently, he coaches the under 20 women's team for the Mississauga
Blues RFC.
"We want to be good right away," said Piemontese. "We want to build
a solid foundation right away, and we want committed
student-athletes wearing the double-blue right away."
Curran, a teacher at Streetsville Secondary School, played Rugby at
Acadia University, and then coached at the University of
Toronto. He is very active with the Mississauga Blues RFC,
coaching the Senior Women and acting as the President.
"Matt and I are ready to sprint out of the gates," said Curran, a
graduate of John Fraser Secondary School. "The rugby community in
Peel and Halton is incredibly strong and the recent growth is
unprecedented. We are ready to field a competitive team
immediately."
