ST. LAWRENCE (K) 70, LOYALIST 36
KINGSTON, Ont. - The SLC-Kingston women's basketball team extended their undefeated streak to five games on Wednesday, Nov. 12, defeating the visiting Loyalist College Lancers 70-36 in front of a packed SLC Gymnasium for the annual Knights of Columbus Basketball Night.
"We have had a great relationship with both the women's and men's Vikings basketball teams over the last few years," said Knights of Columbus president Roland Billings. "A number of our young players look forward to the BBQ each year, and watching both teams play an OCAA (Ontario Colleges Athletics Association) game."
The Vikings built a slim five-point lead after the first quarter; with the Lancers running great offensive plays that created uncontested scoring opportunities.
In the second quarter, the Lancers took advantage of a flat-footed and slow moving Vikings squad. But the Vikings would come alive in the final two minutes of the half, thanks to a steal and three-pointer by Sammy Gourdier that energized SLC.
"It was a really tough first half," said SLC head coach Remy Simpson. "We just looked flat and were not into the game. Fortunately Sammy made a couple of big plays coming off the bench, at the end of the second that got the girls energized."
In the second half, the Vikings were much more confident and organized on both ends of the court, forcing a game-high 30 Loyalist turnovers, and outrebounding the Lancers 50-36 in the 70-36 victory.
The victory advances the Vikings to first overall in the OCAA East Division, and into a tie for first in the league with Humber College from the OCAA West. However the Vikings do have a game in-hand over the Humber Hawks.
For the second straight game, the Vikings got consistent scoring with five players finishing with eight points or more. Both Haley Gourdier and Blythe Glutelius finished with a team-high 10 points, and Becky Orr brought down 13 rebounds in just 13 minutes of playing time.
The Vikings are off until Friday, Nov. 21 when they travel to Ottawa and face the 4-0 Algonquin College. The game will be a big test for both teams as they continue to battle through the regular season.
The next home game for SLC takes place Saturday, Nov. 29 at 1 p.m. against the George Brown College Huskies.
