HUMBER 58, ALGONQUIN 55
TORONTO - The first semi-final game of the day at the belairdirect OCAA Women's Basketball Championship was between Humber Hawks and the Algonquin Thunder. This game proved to be as exciting as it was billed to be. An entertaining game from tip off, both teams fought hard till the final buzzer.
The Hawks pulled out in front by a large margin scoring 17 points in the first quarter. Algonquin was only able to score nine points. The Thunder closed the gap by outscoring the Hawks in the second.
The third quarter was a back and forth affair with each team taking turns being in the lead with the quarter ending in a dead-lock 37-37.
With five minutes to go the game was still tied 46-46. The game came down to the dying moments where Humber pulled away going up 55-50 with 45 seconds left in regulation. However, it was not over yet.
Jesa Rada was fouled on the Thunder's possession and was sent to the free throw line. She sank both to bring Algonquin back within three points. As the Hawks possessed the ball they were fouled and made two more points from the free throw line. After that, Algonquin answered with a three-pointer to narrow the margin to 57-55.
Humber was sent to the foul line once again making one and missing one. It was now 58-55 with 4.6 seconds on the clock. Algonquin got the ball for one final possession as no team had a final time out to call. The Thunder raced down the court with mere seconds left to launch a final three-pointer. The shot missed and Humber took the first semi-final game.
Humber's high scorer was Llyandra Kerr with 13 points and five rebounds. The player of the game for Humber went to Atissa Cronk who scored 12 points and had 11 rebounds.
Algonquin's high scorer was Francesca Bellehumeur-Moya with 20 points, shooting 66 per cent from three-point land. The player of the game for Algonquin went to Felicia Mazerolle.
The Thunder are now relegated to the bronze medal semi-final while the Hawks battle for the OCAA gold medal.
