FANSHAWE 71, SAULT 39
LONDON, Ont. - On Saturday night, the Fanshawe Falcons (10-4) women's basketball team defeated the Sault Cougars (1-12) at the Glenn Johnston Athletic Centre by a final score of 71-39. Fanshawe's Laura Vere led all scorers with 16 points.
After a slow start by both teams, Fanshawe jumped ahead and never looked back, leading 15-6 over the Cougars after the first quarter. Vere led the way for the Falcons with nine points in the quarter. The Falcons picked up the pace in the second, pushing the ball after every defensive stop. Fanshawe's Anique Daley and Lakiesha Cato each had three steals in the half as the Falcons led 32-18 heading into the second half.
Fanshawe continued to press in the third quarter, forcing the Cougars into a number of careless turnovers. Fanshawe headed into the fourth quarter with a 23-point lead, 49-26. The Cougars chipped away at the deficit with several shots from the outside, but Fanshawe pulled away and ended up winning 71-39. Vere finished with a game-high 16 points. The Falcons had 12 different players score in the game.
The Falcons host the Sault Cougars again on Sunday, Feb. 1 at 1 p.m. This will be Fanshawe's last home game of the regular season.
