ST. LAWRENCE (K) 85, FLEMING 16
KINGSTON, Ont. - The St. Lawrence Vikings had to battle through frigid temperatures against the Fleming College Knights, in their first OCAA game of 2015. With the heat broken, players from both teams participated in warm-ups with hoodies and winter jackets, just to stay warm.
Once the game started, SLC didn't waste any time building a lead, as they would go on a 36-point run that spanned two quarters. From there, SLC would rotate through the line-up, running several plays against the Knights who are struggling this year with a 0-8 record, and have been outscored 593-208 across all eight games.
In the second half, the Vikings continued to play very tight defence, which kept the Knights to under 10 points in each remaining quarter in the 85-16 victory.
"Today's game definitely had a different feel to it," said SLC head coach Remy Simpson. "Seeing players run back on defence while blowing into their hands to warm up was a first. But the girls persevered and earned two points."
Sammy Gourdier finished with a team-high 18 points. Lacey Knox finished with 17 points, and Jackie Rodgerson recorded seven steals and 13 points.
The next game for the Vikings will be a big test as it's a battle between No. 1 and No. 2 teams in the OCAA east division. Algonquin College will travel to Kingston, Ont., on Saturday, Jan. 17. Game time is 1 p.m.
