MOHAWK 66, FANSHAWE 61
LONDON, Ont. - On Wednesday night, the Fanshawe women's basketball team fell to the Mohawk Mountaineers (8-1) in their final league game before the holiday break by a final score of 66-61.
The Mohawk Mountaineers got off to a quick start, jumping out to an early lead. After one quarter of play, Fanshawe found itself down 27-13. In the second, Fanshawe's defence picked up but the offence was still struggling to score. Fanshawe continued to trail through the second quarter as the Mountaineers held a 19-point lead, 43-24, at the half.
The Falcons bounced back in the third quarter, slowing chipping away at the Mohawk lead. With three minutes remaining in the quarter, Fanshawe had cut the lead to just six. The Falcons played phenomenal defence in the third, holding the Mountaineers to just five points. Kiera Serodio hit a shot to beat the buzzer at the end of the third, making the score 48-44 going into the fourth quarter.
Laura Vere hit a jumper to open the final quarter, bringing the Falcons to within two. After that, Mohawk scored a quick five points, forcing Fanshawe to take a time out.
The game remained close and with under two minutes to play, Stephanie Antwi stole the ball and drove in for the basket, closing the gap to just two again. Mohawk hit some clutch free throws down the stretch and despite the comeback by Fanshawe in the second half, the Falcons fell to Mohawk by a final score 66-61.

LONDON, Ont. - The Mohawk women's basketball team went to the mid-season break with their eighth consecutive OCAA victory, 66-61 over Fanshawe in London, Ont., on Wednesday.
Stef Hrymak led the Mountaineers with 16 points. Shanien O'Neill scored 15 and Jen Jen Abella had 11 points, seven assists and four steals. Jakayla Douse contributed seven points, 10 rebounds and four steals.
Mohawk improved to 8-1, the same as Humber, while the Falcons fell to 7-2.
"It's great to get a win against a tough division rival in a place that traditionally has been very difficult for us to succeed," said Mohawk head coach Kevin Duffy. "All the credit goes to our players. Despite numerous injuries and adversities, they never made excuses and deserve all the credit for our current win streak. The break is coming at just the right time for us."
Meanwhile, the Fanshawe men downed Mohawk 89-84. The Falcons moved into a first place tie with Humber at 8-1. The Mountaineers slipped to 7-2, having their seven-game win string snapped.
Matt Fennell paced Mohawk with 19 points and 10 rebounds. Andrew Cicuttini scored 17 points and added nine boards and Patrick Iavarone had 12 points.
"It was a tough way to end the semester," said Mountaineers head coach Brian Jonker. "But we feel we are positioned well for the second half."
