MOHAWK 64, DURHAM 50
HAMILTON, Ont. - Five different players made three-point shots in the first quarter of Mohawk's quarter-final matchup with the Durham Lords for 15 of their 20 points in the quarter.
The Mountaineers now await the winner of Sheridan and Humber to see whom they will face in the semi-final on Friday at 8 p.m. after defeating the Lords 64-50 in their opening game at the David Braley Athletic and Recreation Centre.
To start the second quarter, the Mountaineers implemented a full-court press and got in the way of Durham's cross-court pass attempts to hold the Lords to just six points in the period. Mohawk also turned their good defence into offence, finding more ways to score than just behind the arc. Offensive rebounds and a good transition game helped the Mountaineers pull ahead 37-20 at the halftime break.
Durham started to press on defence to start the third quarter and slowly crept back into the game after a couple of forced turnovers. Mohawk adjusted, however, and was able to pass around the pressure to hang onto an eight-point third quarter lead.
Mohawk's defence continued to stifle the Lords offence in the fourth quarter, getting their arms into the passing lanes, causing tipped passes and forcing turnovers.
Mohawk's player of the game and leading scorer was Jen Abella with 16 points. Abella also added three assists. Jen's sister Rachelle led the game with five assists. Kauri LaFontaine was named player of the game for Durham, scoring a team-high 12 points.
Durham will play the loser of the Sheridan-Humber matchup in the bronze quarterfinal at 3 p.m. on Friday.
