FANSHAWE 71, HUMBER 61
The Fanshawe Falcons women's basketball team hosted the Humber Hawks at the Glenn Johnston Athletics Centre on Wednesday night. The Falcons knocked off the ninth-ranked team in the country 71-61. Fanshawe improved to 11-2 with the win, and now sit three games up on the Hawks in the OCAA standings.
After five lead changes, the teams were tied 16-16 at the end of the first quarter. Again, the teams traded baskets back and forth in the second, before the Falcons went on an 11-4 run, taking a 32-26 lead at halftime.
Two quick baskets from freshman guard Rachel Jaworowicz got Fanshawe's offence rolling in the third. The Falcons fast transition game led to capitalizing on the Hawks turnovers and they extended their lead to 13 points midway through the third. The momentum swung back to the visitors after an 11-4 run had them back to within six points with one quarter to play.
A 7-1 run by Humber to start the fourth had the game tied 55-55. Seven straight points from third-year point guard Felicia Mazerolle helped the Falcons pull away in the final minutes and secure the victory.
Ten different players scored on the night for the Falcons and Fanshawe h coach Matt White was very pleased with the entire lineup contributing in the victory.
"We are pretty balanced from top to bottom. We have several players that can put up 20 points on any given night, but with such balanced scoring it makes it tough on opponents to settle in on one player."
Three players reached double figures in the game for the Falcons; Felicia Mazerolle (13), Tanisha Bromfield (11), and Rachel Jaworowicz (10).
Fanshawe will travel to Oakville on Feb. 2, for their next game against the Sheridan Bruins (6-6).
