MOHAWK 68, SHERIDAN 64
BRAMPTON, Ont. - Having found themselves trailing by as many as 17 points in the second half, the Sheridan Bruins women's basketball team (7-7, 4-4 OCAA) made an inspired effort to crawl back within shouting distance, but ultimately had too much ground to make up and dropped a 68-64 decision to Mohawk.
"We were totally sloppy and slow defensively," head coach Willie Delas said. "I think we allowed Mohawk to get more than 20 uncontested layups and that's pretty bad. We've got to work on that in practice and get it resolved."
The first quarter was close the entire way, featuring six ties and six lead changes and the two sides remained dead locked at 19-19 after 10 minutes.
Mohawk took control early in the second frame, using an 11-1 run to build the largest lead of the game, 30-22.
A 7-0 run from the homeside pulled the Double-Blue within one, but Mohawk would push it back to six, 36-30, at the half.
The Lady Bruins struggled to hit shots in the third quarter and saw their halftime deficit doubled, as they trailed 52-41 entering the final quarter.
A 6-0 run to open gave Mohawk a 17-point cushion and while Sheridan had runs of 7-0 and 10-0 in the quarter, they were unable to pull level at any point.
Haeven Durrant led the way with 20-points while Dainique Campbell (14) and Shylanda Saunders (10) also hit double figures.
The Lady Bruins have just one game remaining in the first semester - a trip to play their rivals from Humber on December 1 - and Delas says that despite having only two days to prepare the coaching staff is well aware of some areas that could use some fine-tuning.
"It starts with the defence, but also some fundamental things too," he said. "Defensively we need to deny, box out and work on our rebounding. We've got to get a better attack in the paint offensively to get higher quality shots."
