SENECA 51, GEORGE BROWN 50
In what may be the first of many close games for the Seneca Sting this season, the young Sting team found a way to get their second win on the young season over a very game George Brown Huskies team.
Seneca looked poise to coast for the final half as they took a 25-11 lead into the locker room. Chanel Grelmore had eight points in the first half while Sharika Smith added seven along with five form Lauren Egglestone. Just three Huskies found the bucket in the first half as Shan Wilson and Kara Da Silva each scored four.
George Brown closed the lead to four heading into the fourth as they outscored the Sting 19-9 in The Hive. Wilson led the Huskies with six in the quarter while Egglestone paced the home team with five points.
The drama unfolded late in the fourth quarter as Seneca clung to a 51-47 lead with just seconds remaining. Quichelle Barriffe, who already had two 3-pointers in the quarter, nailed a three point shot from the top of the key to close the lead to 51-50 with less than 10 seconds remaining. On the inbound, the Huskies' defense caused confusing for Seneca which resulted in a travelling call with 2.1 seconds remaining and one final opportunity for the Huskies. Following a timeout, George Brown executed their play, but the potential game winning shot rimmed out as Seneca moved to 2-0 at home.
Sharika Smith led the Sting with 15 points on the evening while Grelmore (13) and Egglestone (12) contributed in double figures. Ashley Nurse and Paige Smith each added seven rebounds for Seneca. The Huskies were led by Barriffe and Wilson with twelve each while Aria Charles had eleven points thanks to a 5-for-6 performance from the free throw line. Wilson also contributed five rebounds and four steals.
The Seneca Sting (2-1) will travel to play Cambrian (0-1) Saturday at 1 p.m. while the George Brown Huskies (1-2) will host Algonquin (2-0) November 17 at 1 p.m.
