SENECA 67, ST. LAWRENCE (K) 52
Coming off a 15-1 regular season and spot in the National Championship, there was a lot of pressure coming into 2012-13 season for the Seneca Sting women's basketball program. That pressure heightened after a season opening loss at Fleming on Wednesday. With a 0-2 start facing them head on, the Seneca Sting shook off some early jitters in front of the home crowd and came away with a 67-52 victory.
The Sting led by four at the end of the first quarter on the strength of three three-pointers in a row by Kadijah Henry, but played sluggish ball in the second and fell behind to the St. Lawrence Vikings. The Vikings took a 33-27 lead into the half thanks to eight points in the quarter by Jacklyn Rodgerson.
In the second half, Seneca moved the ball around as a team and started to tighten up on the defensive end. Sharika Smith had nine points in the third quarter while Seneca outscored the Vikings 18-11.
In the fourth, Seneca dominated play for all ten minutes of the quarter. The Sting had their best offensive output of the game with twenty-two points, while holding the Vikings to just eight.
For the game, Smith had 24 points on 10-of-22 shooting from the floor, including 4-of-5 from the free throw line. Ashley Nurse and Lauren Egglestone each had seven rebounds for the Sting. Lacey Knox had 18 points for the Vikings while Rodgerson and Jessica Cetoute scored 10 each. Cetoute also added seven rebounds for St. Lawrence.
The Seneca Sting (1-1) will host George Brown on Tuesday at 6 p.m. while the St. Lawrence Vikings (0-1) will travel to Georgian on Saturday afternoon.
