TRURO, N.S. - The MSVU Mystics defeated the Fanshawe Falcons 67-62 in their final game of the 2013 CCAA Women's Basketball National Championship on Saturday.
In a game that saw seven lead changes, it was the effort in the first quarter that secured a Mystics victory. After leading the Falcons by eight points in the first quarter, the Mystics were in control for the better portion of the game.
MSVU's lead slowly slipped away in the final period, as Fanshawe clawed their way back to within two points with just under two minutes left in regulation. MSVU grinded it out in the end with a final push that put them up by five and iced the game.
The Mystics offence featured a balanced attack with Emma Reardon, the game MVP, standing out with 15 points and eight rebounds. Marika Williams had 10 points of her own to go along with four rebounds.
Throughout the entire tournament the Fanshawe attacked relied heavily on the shoulders of point guard Felicia Mazerolle and this game was no exception. Mazerolle contributed a team-high 18 points to go along with six steals and six rebounds.
Since both teams opened the tournament with consecutive losses, they were knocked out of medal contention. With the win, MSVU finishes the tournament in seventh place while Fanshawe places eighth.
