ANCASTER, Ont. - The Redeemer Royals gave their noisy fans lots to cheer about Tuesday as they defeated the Mohawk Mountaineers in both OCAA volleyball games in Ancaster, Ont.
The Redeemer men jumped out to a 2-0 lead in their match, just to see Mohawk get off the floor to take the next two sets. However, the Royals won the fifth and deciding game to end the Mountaineers perfect start to the season. The scores were 30-28, 25-15, 23-25, 21-25 and 15-12.
With the defeat, Mohawk is now 7-1 while Redeemer moved to 6-1.
Morgan Rutledge was the top gun for the Royals with 17 kills, three service aces and two stuff blocks. Nico DeBruyne had 12 kills and 12 blocks. Jeffrey Ekeanyanwu also had 12 kills and three blocks. Rueben Middel contributed 44 assists and eight digs.
For the Mountaineers, Eric Girard led the way with 15 kills, three blocks and nine digs. Trevor McLaughlin had 12 kills, three blocks and nine digs. Max Anderson produced 11 kills and one block. Chris Spack had 45 assists and Steven Falk led all players with 12 digs.
Meanwhile, fifth-year star Curtiss Straatsma powered the Redeemer Royals to a straight sets win over the Mohawk Mountaineers in women's play. Straatsma had 12 kills, five service aces and one stuff block in the Royals 25-11, 25-20, 25-21 win over their Hamilton rivals. Jocelyn Klompmaker had four kills, three aces and four blocks, while Tara Van Halteren added four kills and three aces as Redeemer improved to 4-3.
Mohawk, which slipped to 2-6, was led by Kirsten Bialachowski with five kills, one ace and one block. Alexandria Pulham had three kills, two aces and 10 digs.
