YELDON NAMED OCAA MEN'S VOLLEYBALL PLAYER OF THE YEAR
OAKVILLE, Ont. - Algonquin College's Philippe Yeldon was named the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) men's volleyball player of the year in a ceremony held at the Oakville Conference Centre in Oakville, Ont. on Thursday morning as part of the 2013 OCAA Men's Volleyball Championship.
OAKVILLE, Ont. - Algonquin College's Philippe Yeldon was named the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) men's volleyball player of the year in a ceremony held at the Oakville Conference Centre in Oakville, Ont. on Thursday morning as part of the 2013 OCAA Men's Volleyball Championship.
The OCAA East Division scoring champion led all OCAA players averaging 5.1 points per set. Yeldon totaled 374 points, 270 kills, 48 blocks and a league-high 56 aces for an Algonquin team that won the OCAA East regional crown for a second straight season. The Ottawa native is also a Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) all-Canadian, as well as an OCAA East Division first-team all-star.
Shayne Petrusma (Bowmanville) of Niagara and Frankie Edgecombe (Elmvale) of Nipissing are also CCAA all-Canadians. Petrusma was the OCAA West scoring champion averaging 4.0 points per set with 254 points, 210 kills, 23 aces and 21 blocks. Niagara won the OCAA West regional title. Edgecombe averaged 3.3 points per set with 198 points, 136 kills, 32 blocks and 30 aces. Petrusma and Edgecombe are both OCAA West Division first-team all-stars.
Niagara's Jeff Scott (Georgetown) was named the OCAA rookie of the year to go along with his West Division rookie award. Scott was second in team scoring during the regular season averaging 3.1 points per set. He totaled 207 points, 171 kills, 24 blocks and 12 aces. He was also named an OCAA West second-team all-star.
Lyndon Sonego (Barrie) of Georgian is the OCAA East rookie of the year. Sonego led the Grizzlies with a 4.7 points per set average, earning 362 points, 303 kills, 44 aces and 15 blocks.
Wayne Harris of Redeemer was named West Division coach of the year and is the OCAA nominee for CCAA coach of the year. Harris led the Royals to their best finish in three seasons as Redeemer earned a bye into the OCAA championship. The second place Royals won more sets (49) then any of their rivals in the West region.
George Brown's Josh Nichol was named East Division coach of the year. The Huskies had their best season since their return to OCAA men's volleyball, finishing with a 16-4 record for third place in the East region. George Brown has a 8-12 record last season. The Huskies ended the regular season on a seven-game win streak.
In addition to Yeldon, Durham's Craig Lush (Port Perry) and Riley McAllister (Oshawa); George Brown's Richard Serote (Toronto) and Edwin Sheon (Toronto); Jordan Darlington (Ajax) of Seneca; and Loyalist's Jared Moelker (Trenton) are this season's OCAA East Division first-team all-stars.
Joining Petrusma and Edgecombe as OCAA West first-team all-stars are Humber's Andre Brown (Mississauga) and Aleks Inveiss (Toronto); Redeemer's Jake Klassen (Surrey, B.C.) and David Klomps (Surrey, B.C.); and Scott Coulthard (Wingham) of Nipissing.
OCAA East second-team all-stars include Clay Couchman (Blue Mountain) of Fleming; Seneca's Predrag Gajic (Scarborough), Keith Marier (Ottawa) of La Cite; Algonquin's Ian McAlpine (Ottawa); Eric Oliviera (Toronto) of George Brown; Georgian's Michael Vandinther (Barrie); and Brad VanHartingsveldt (Newcastle) of Durham.
Joining Scott as West second-team all-stars are Sheridan's Josh Butler (London) and Jeremy Fantin (Mississauga); Humber's Matt Isaacs (Pickering) and Derek Quinn (Mississauga); Eric Heidbuurt (Waterdown) of Redeemer; and Fanshawe's Matthew Stewart (Brisbane, Australia).
