QUEBEC CITY - The Humber Hawks men's volleyball team not only
won the prestigious Limoilou Invitational, they did so by defeating
the host Titans, and completed a sweep of the tournament in
straight sets.
The seven consecutive victories and run of 21 straight set wins
came against four teams that are currently ranked in the top ten of
the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) men's
volleyball rankings.
The final saw the Hawks match up against the host and perennial
national power Limoilou Titans. Humber entered the game with six
victories, one more than the Titans as the Humber squad played in a
pool of five teams in the opening round robin. Humber advanced to
the title game by way of a 3-0 win over St. Jerome, from
Quebec.
Humber came out strong in the first and put the hosts away by a
score of 25-20. The second set was much closer and needed extra
points before the Hawks prevailed 26-24. Humber left no doubt as
they took the third and final set by a tight score of 25-23.
A very tired but elated squad filled the court to celebrate the
win.
"With the win this weekend I feel that we have moved forward as a
team," said Humber head coach Wayne Wilkins. "The competition and
schedule here is as tough as they come."
Hawk superstar Terrel Bramwell was selected as the tournament most
valuable player.
