ST. LAWRENCE (K) 2, CENTENNIAL 2
SCARBOROUGH, Ont. - The St. Lawrence College women's and men's soccer teams hit the road this weekend to play two games in just over 24 hours, playing the Centennial College Colts on Saturday, Sept. 13, and the Seneca College Sting on Sunday.
Having settled for a tie in their home opener against Durham College, the Vikings women's team recorded their first win of the season with a 2-1 victory over the Colts. It was a spirited and emotional game that had both teams playing very hard and physical.
"Our girls played very well considering the environment they were playing in. They rose above it, played the game, and we were able to come away with an important win," said SLC head coach Natasha Agaoglu.
Mallory McQueen and Megan Simpson scored for SLC.
On the men's side, the Vikings were also looking for their first win of the season, having lost 1-0 to Durham College just a week ago. The Vikings would find themselves up 2-1 with goals coming from Colton Gallant and Gabe Jones. However, at the 80-minute mark, Centennial would be awarded a penalty kick and tied the game on the golden opportunity.
"It was disappointing for a call like that to happen in the final minutes of the game. The guys played hard and deserved the win today," said SLC head coach Steve Douglas.
Both teams will play the Seneca Sting on Sunday afternoon. The SLC women's team may be in for a tough game, with the Sting flying high to start their season, outscoring their opponents 13-0 in their first two games. Douglas and the men's squad are looking forward to playing at Seneca again, having nearly defeated the Sting in the 2013-14 Ontario Colleges Athletics Association (OCAA) crossover playoff game.
