AMHERSTBURG, Ont. - The St. Clair College men's soccer team is close to clinching a playoff spot in the very tough OCAA West Division. The Saints defeated the Lambton Lions 2-0 on Wednesday night in Amherstburg.
The Saints got off to a great start as Jordan Lidia (Cardinal Carter) scored in the seventh minute to put St. Clair up 1-0. Gabriel Poulino (Catholic Central) scored in the 60th minute to give St. Clair some breathing room. Shane Beaton (Walkerville) was solid in net in picking up the shutout and win.
With the win, the Saints record improved to 3-2-2 on the season. Their final regular season match is Saturday afternoon in Ancaster against the Redeemer Royals.
St. Clair is currently in fourth place in the OCAA West Division with 11 points. The best the Saints can do is finish in fourth place which would result in a home playoff game. Because the three teams below them have two matches remaining a playoff spot is not guaranteed at this point.
A win or a draw on Saturday would secure a playoff spot. The top six teams make the playoffs. The top two teams get a first round by while the third and fourth place teams host the fifth and sixth place teams.
