CONESTOGA 31, SHERIDAN 0
OAKVILLE, Ont. - They acquitted themselves quite well of the horrendous start they had the week prior, but over the course of 80 minutes the Sheridan Bruins men's rugby team (1-3 OCAA) still didn't quite have an answer for Conestoga, dropping their home finale 31-0.
"We're happy with the effort, we asked them to get back on track after last week where things got off course and the effort was there," Sheridan head coach Carlos Moniz said. "We played a really good first half, one mistake resulted in their score. In the second half, they're a good team, and they just kept coming at us, and we held them off for certain parts, but couldn't for other parts. We're developing, we're building, we're getting better and we need to play games like this in order to improve."
The Double-Blue managed to dodged an early bullet when a Conestoga back was able to slice through the Sheridan line and was about to touch it down under the bars, but lost the handle before he got it to ground.
After the ensuing scrum, the Bruins were able to work the ball into Conestoga territory, but were unable to break through the line.
Nearing the half hour mark, Conestoga managed to find paydirt, touching it down just over inside the left touchline.
The conversion kick was unsuccessful, but the visitors trailed 5-0 at the interval.
In the second half, Conestoga was able to maintain a high intensity and eventually wore down the Bruins to push the contest well out of reach.
The club now has a tough draw in their next contest, travelling to play the reigning champions from Humber, and while Moniz knows exactly what their opposition is capable of, he says it will be a critical contest in the development of the team.
"Next week's going to be a very difficult game, they're the first place team and they're really catching fire right now," he said. "We need to look at that game and the game after that as development for next year. We need to think of next year as kind of an eight game season, including these games. What we do on Thursday and what we do the following week after, are all steps in the development of our team. How we've been approaching it, is we won't worry about score, we're just worried about getting better, working on some things and just improving certain aspects, so that next year we'll build on what we've done right now."
