ST. LAWRENCE (K) 29, SENECA 15
KINGSTON, Ont. - It was more than just another win for the St. Lawrence College (SLC) men's rugby team on Saturday, Sept. 28 over the Seneca College Sting. It was the first time the Vikings squad has defeated Sting since making the jump from Division II to Division I in 2011-12.
SLC would take full advantage of a sloppy start by Seneca, recording three straight penalties within the first five minutes of the match. St. Lawrence would score two tries early in the match to go up 10-0, half way through the first half.
From there, Seneca would begin to pick up their play and start capitalizing on some of the turnovers made by the Vikings. The Sting assault would continue for the majority of the second half until SLC scored late in the half, followed by a goal-line stance to secure the 29-15 victory.
"While we're happy to get the win, this was not the best effort by our squad today. We made several turnovers and errors, giving Seneca far too many opportunities to score," said Vikings head coach Brad Greenwood.
"There is still lots of room for improvement for us, which needs to happen to be a contender for playoffs," Greenwood added.
The man of the match for St. Lawrence College was rookie Jordan Riddle.
Vikings tries were scored by Jack McCleery, Jordan Riddle, Andrew Noble, and Chris Brodie. Stefan Mackey put up nine points for SLC.
The Vikings won't have much time to rest, as they play again next Friday, Oct. 4 in Peterborough. Game time is 7:30 p.m., under the lights, against the Trent University Excalibur.
