FLEMING 29, SENECA 7
MARKHAM, Ont. - The reigning OCAA bronze medalists, the Seneca Sting, battled hard against the visiting Fleming Knights on Sunday afternoon, but were ultimately defeated by a bigger, faster and strong Knights team, 29-7.
The Sting spent time chasing the Knights as they moved the ball from man to man, rarely able to catch the ball carrier. When the Sting did catch the ball carrier, they were driven backwards by the powerful Knights.
Seneca fell behind early as Fleming drove down the field in an efficient manner. Fleming's Nick Boomhower faked a kick which froze the Sting tacklers. From there, Boomhower turned up field, moving the ball deep into the Seneca zone. A team push drove Seneca backwards as Fleming took an early 5-0 lead.
The Knights added to their lead moments later as ball movement once again set up them up deep in the Seneca zone. Ryan Lewis carried the ball across the goal line for the try to put the Knights up 10-0. Fleming was unsuccessful on the convert.
Seneca, realizing the match could get out of hand, pushed back. With Jaret Fawcett (Ajax) leading the charge, the Sting used a team effort to drive the Knights back to their own goal line. Fawcett completed the offensive push with a try in the right corner on a drive which saw him also make a 20-yard run, carrying Knight tacklers along the way. Jordan Lofthouse (Stouffville) made the convert to pull within three.
The Knights took over the match from that point, with Lewis scoring a try on a long run which saw him elude a number of Sting defenders. Leeroy Cowie made the convert to restore the 10-point lead.
Seneca's Oday Warrayat (Mississauga) briefly thwarted a Fleming scoring attempt with a goal line stand, but Peter Phillips was able to score a try off of a block kick attempt.
Fleming's Kobi Whitney completed the scoring with a try, before tempers heated up prior to the final whistle.
The Sting are back in action on Saturday as they travel to St. Lawrence at 3 p.m. The Knights will host Trent on Friday at 4:30 p.m.
