GEORGIAN 26, CONESTOGA 5
BARRIE, Ont. - Battling incredibly wet conditions Saturday afternoon at the Barrie Community Sports Complex the Georgian Grizzlies men's rugby team were able earn a 26-5 victory over the Conestoga Condors in Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) action.
Georgian came out strong but fell short on a pair of opportunities to score early. Undeterred, the Grizzlies kept battling through the rain when Austin St. Amant (Tiny) pushed his way through to open the scoring.
Georgian held a 12-0 lead at the half after A.J. Luongo scored his first try of the season to extend the Grizzlies lead.
Following the break the skies really opened up, leaving both teams to battle in soaking wet conditions. Georgian added to their lead with tries from Drew Currie (Fenelon Falls) and Brett White (Erin) and never looked back.
Paul Marshall (Barrie) led the team in scoring for the second straight game with six points on three converts.
Greg Dawkins had the lone try for Conestoga.
"It was a battle out there for sure today," said Grizzlies head coach John Daggett. "I'm really pleased with the effort our guys put forth."
The win improves the Grizzlies record to a perfect 2-0 on the season with a current hold on first place in the OCAA West Division standings.
"That was an important game for us, but we need to keep moving forward and be ready for Sheridan next weekend."
The Grizzlies will travel to face the Sheridan Bruins next Saturday in Oakville at 12 p.m. Georgian's next home game is on Wednesday, Oct. 9 at 4 p.m. at the Barrie Community Sports Complex when they face the Humber Hawks.
