MOHAWK 99, FANSHAWE 52
BRAMPTON, Ont. - Although the game was tight through much of the first 20 minutes, the Mohawk Mountaineers began to wrestle control of the momentum from the Fanshawe Falcons late in the half and would use a big second half en route to a 99-52 victory that pushed them into the semi-final of the 2014 belairdirect OCAA Men's Basketball Championship.
It was a back and forth battle through much of the first quarter, with Mohawk closing the frame on a 9-1 run to lead 19-12.
Fanshawe would battle back in the second stanza to take a 28-27 lead, only to see Mohawk reply with another big run - this time 11-2 - where they took a 38-30 lead at the break.
They carried that momentum over into the third quarter where they opened on another 11-2 run, pushing their margin to 17.
Mohawk would out-score Fanshawe 33-15 in the third, to lead 71-45.
Fanshawe never quite got on track in the final period and the margin proved to be more lopsided than the game probably warranted.
Matt Fennell scored a game-high 21 points, while Andrew Cicuttini chipped in with 20 points and 15 boards, while Alex Reis also hit double figures with 19.
Bryan McDonald led Fanshawe with 15, while Chavaun Miller-Bennett also hit double digits with 14.
Mohawk will advance to the semi final where they will meet the winner of the Sheridan and George Brown quarter-final, while Fanshawe will take on the loser of that game in the bronze medal quarter-final.
