CENTENNIAL 75, ST. LAWRENCE (K) 69
KINGSTON, Ont. - For their fourth consecutive game, the St. Lawrence Vikings men's basketball team faced an opponent in the Top 4 of the Ontario Colleges Athletics Association (OCAA) East Division.
Having lost the previous three games to Algonquin, Seneca, and George Brown College, St. Lawrence College (SLC) was in tough against the 5-3 Centennial College Colts.
The Colts took charge of the game during the first half, as they were able to hit contested three-point shots, grab rebounds at both ends, and force several SLC turnovers. In the second half, the Vikings came alive, shutting down the Colts defensively. However, Centennial never gave up the lead throughout the game, defeating the Vikings 62-71.
"We continue to turn the ball over as a team when we're pressured," said Vikings head coach Barry Smith. "We're not protecting the ball at key moments of the game, resulting in us not being able to build any momentum."
After the first quarter, the Vikings were only down by six points, in large part because of the strong play by Andrew Dawkins. But the Colts continued to hit great shots and push their lead to 13 points. Dawkins would finish the first half going 3-of-5 from the three-point line, shot 67 percent from the field, and finishing with 11 points.
The halftime pep talk clearly paid off for the Vikings as they came alive in the third quarter, outscoring the Colts 18-15 and coming within 10 points of tying the game. Meanwhile, Centennial would go ice cold from the field.
Centennial would switch to a full court press to start the fourth quarter, which forced several Vikings turnovers. SLC would keep the game within reach, but were unable to come any closer on the scoreboard, as they would fall 71-62. The defeat was the Vikings fourth consecutive loss.
SLC heads into the holiday break with a 4-6 record, sitting in sixth place in the OCAA East Division. The Vikings will play in the George Brown College Invitational from Jan. 3-4, before resuming the regular season on Friday, Jan. 10 at 8 p.m., when they host the Seneca College Sting.
