FANSHAWE 63, ST. CLAIR 54
LONDON, Ont. - On Thursday night, the Fanshawe Falcons men's basketball team (5-2) defeated the St. Clair Saints (5-3) by a final score of 63-54. The win moves Fanshawe into a tie for third in the OCAA West Division standings.
Fanshawe's offence exploded to start the game, with the Falcons taking a 13-2 lead after the first four minutes of play. The Saints had trouble setting up their offence with Fanshawe's full court pressure on for the entire quarter. At the end of the first, the score was 19-5 for Fanshawe. The Falcons pushed the lead to 18 before St. Clair's Matei Nuna made back-to-back three pointers, cutting the Falcons lead to 12. Fanshawe's Chavaun Miller-Bennett put on a shooting display, putting up 10 points in the quarter. The Falcons took a 34-20 lead into the half.
St. Clair slowly chipped away at Fanshawe's lead, and was even within single digits after a number of deep three pointers but the Falcons gathered themselves and pushed the lead back to 14 going into the final quarter. With six minutes left, St. Clair's Xavier Jones drove to the hoop for the basket, bringing the Saints to within four, the closest it had been since the opening minute of the game. Foul trouble for the Saints sent the Falcons to the line for the final 5:30 minutes, where Fanshawe capitalized; knocking down eight of their final 10 free throws. Fanshawe went on to win the game by a final score of 63-54.
Fanshawe's Chris Stanhope finished the game with 20 points and 12 rebounds. Demetrias Kah and Nuna both scored 10 for the Saints.
The Falcons next game takes place on Saturday, Nov. 23 at 6 p.m. versus the Lambton Lions (2-5). The Lions are currently eighth in the OCAA West Division standings.
