ST. LAWRENCE (K) 74, LOYALIST 59
KINGSTON, Ont. - The St. Lawrence College men's basketball team entered their sixth game of the Ontario Colleges Athletics Association (OCAA) regular season against the 3-1 Loyalist College Lancers on a three game winning streak, having defeated Durham, La Cité, and Fleming College.
It was a sluggish first quarter, as both teams spent the 10 minutes seeing what plays they were running, and trying to find ways to exploit them. The strategy would pay off for one team, as the Lancers would record 21 points from three-pointers, and shot 55 percent, to finish the second quarter with 32 points.
The Vikings were able to counter by getting the ball to Chris Offspring who utilized the size mismatch in the paint to record 11 points. But the Lancers ability to hit the quick three-point shot took its toll in the first half.
After the halftime, SLC stormed the court and took charge of the game. Forcing Loyalist to take the tough shots without a clear view of the net, finally forcing them off their game. The Vikings continued to get the ball to first-year player, Offspring, who completely dominated the second half at both ends of the court.
SLC carried that strategy right through the half, holding the Lancers to just 14 points in the half. The turnaround by the Vikings reached a boiling point for the Lancers with their head coach receiving his second technical foul late in the fourth quarter, securing the Vikings 74-59 fourth straight victory.
Offspring could not be contained in the second half, as he finished the game with 26 points, and 26 rebounds (18 of which being defensive rebounds).
"Tonight was just one of those nights, when you're in the zone and you can do no wrong," said Offspring.
"I realized that I could control the rebounds at both ends, and that gave us a huge advantage in the game. My teammates were able to force Loyalist to take tough shots, and I was there to clean up the mess."
The Vikings won't have much to rest, as they host the first place Algonquin College Thunder on Saturday, Nov. 16 at 3 p.m.
