GEORGE BROWN 69, ST. LAWRENCE (K) 64
KINGSTON, Ont. - The Vikings men's basketball team faced the George Brown Huskies on Friday. St. Lawrence entered the game in sixth place in an extremely tight OCAA East Division, while George Brown was off to an impressive 7-1 start and on a seven-game winning streak.
The Vikings didn't want to disappoint in front of a great crowd Friday night, and started the game very quickly with fast breaks and quick transitions. The strategy worked with St. Lawrence jumping ahead early in the game, but George Brown wouldn't let SLC get very far resulting in only a three-point lead at the end of the first quarter. The remaining first half featured the teams playing more quick basketball, with St. Lawrence being up for the challenge, having no difficulty keeping up with George Brown.
The third quarter featured George Brown pulling ahead by as much as seven, but St. Lawrence would bounce back to tie the game by playing tight defence, capitalizing on forced turnovers, and dominating defensive rebounds. Vikings found themselves down 49-52 at the end of the third, but Emmanuel Bolamba would hit a clutch three pointer to start the fourth quarter to tie the game. Teams would exchange the lead several times in the fourth, with the Huskies in fear of loosing their seven game winning streak.
With the game extremely close late in the fourth, Sangee Martin drove to the boards and did not receive the call in his favor resulting in head coach, Barry Smith receiving a technical foul. With the game tied in the final minute, Dwayne Harrison from George Brown hit a clutch long distance field goal to put the Huskies up by two. St. Lawrence would not be able to bring down a defensive rebound within the final 20 seconds, and George Brown stole the win from St. Lawrence, 69-64.
In what was a balanced team effort, the scoring was evenly spread amongst the Vikings. Emmanuel Bolamba would score 17 points, and Jahmal Edwards recorded nine rebounds. Despite the loss, St. Lawrence showed that they are a strong team against one of the best squads in the OCAA.
The Vikings are back at it tomorrow Saturday at 3 p.m. against the 0-8 Cabrian College Golden Shield.
