SENECA 91, LOYALIST 71
When Seneca head coach Bill Crowdis was hired in the summer to coach the Seneca Sting men's basketball team, many were prepared to be patient with the new coach as he implemented his system. Crowdis and his team have surprised many early this OCAA season as they won their fifth game with a convincing 91-71 win over the Loyalist Lancers.
Seneca came out shooting in the first half as the team made six three-pointers in the first quarter and another three in the second. As a team, the Sting shot 52.9 percent from beyond the arc in the opening half. That shooting has been the cornerstone for a team who is looking to turn heads not only in the OCAA, but also on campus as crowds continue to grow to watch these ballers in grey.
Seneca went toe-to-toe with the Lancers in the first quarter and came out ahead with a 26-19 lead thanks to the previously mentioned six three-pointers. Felix Adjei finished with 12 points in the quarter for the Sting while Jamale Boyce connected on two threes. Patrick Kalala did his best to keep the Lancers in it with seven points in the first.
The Sting grew their lead in the second quarter as Vadim Hamilov elevated his game to the tune of 11 for the quarter. Despite Adjei going cold, Seneca took a 47-33 lead into the half with four players registering at least eight points.
A low-scoring third frame saw the home team extend their lead to 15 thanks to a 7-0 run to open the second half. Brayden Gohn paced the Lancers with seven points while Derek D'Jesus and Devan (R.J.) Allen-Leslie scored their first points of the game.
In the final quarter, Seneca kicked their tempo into high gear and didn't let up until the game was completely in control as they dropped 28 points in the quarter. Adjei found his rhythm in the quarter with another 12 points while Hamilov added seven of his own.
Seneca's Felix Adjei finished with 29 points on 12-of-22 shooting from the floor along with five blocked shots. Hamilov contributed 25 points on 10-of-19 shooting while adding a team-leading eight rebounds. D'Jesus had seven assists with Boyce adding another six assists. The Lancers were led by Patrick Kalala who had 20 points and Zach Marcelline who had 16. Marcelline led the team with eight rebounds and five assists.
The Seneca Sting (4-1) will host La Cité (3-2) tomorrow at 1 p.m. while the Loyalist Lancers (2-2) will travel to play Algonquin (5-0) November 23 at 8 p.m.
