MOHAWK 73, CENTENNIAL 69 (FINAL)
All Canadian Aminu Bello scored a three pointer with just over one minute remaining and Alex Reis hit two free throws with only 11 seconds to go as the Mohawk Mountaineers won an edge of your seat 73-69 quarter final victory over the Centennial Colts to open their play in the OCAA Men's Basketball Championship in Ottawa Thursday (March 1)
The Mountaineers, who finished fourth in the West Region jumped into an early lead, but the Colts rallied to go ahead 15-14. However, Mohawk took advantage of some steals and missed Centennial chances and had several breakaways for easy lay-ins. The Mountaineers led 42-27 at half time and appeared in good shape.
But a very poor third quarter by Mohawk saw Centennial, the East Region regular season champions, chip away to cut the 15 point deficit down to just three, 52-49.
They then tied the score late in the final period, but the Colts also lost their key player and three point threat Theon Reefer who fouled out shortly thereafter.
Mohawk will meet the Georgian Grizzlies of Barrie in the semi final Friday at 6:00 pm at Algonquin College.
Georgian trailed Sheridan by 12 points at the intermission, but rallied for a 69-66 verdict over the Bruins.
