SHERIDAN 88, REDEEMER 72 (FINAL)
BRAMPTON, Ont. - With a break for exams and the holidays looming, the Sheridan Bruins men's basketball team (14-6, 6-3 OCAA) looked like a team that was just going through the motions in their final game of the first semester, emerging with a sluggish 88-72 win over Redeemer.
"As the song says, we've got a long way to go and a short time to get there," head coach Jim Flack said. "[The players will] have a nice break now while the coaches will be able to sit and meet to decide which direction we'll go with these guys because if it's a mile race, we're into the last lap now. We have to decide: who's going to play; what philosophy we're going to use; who wants to play as hard and with the intensity we want; and who can execute night after night. With that determined, we'll just hit the ground running [after the break] and see how we do."
Redeemer set the pace in the opening minutes, taking an early 4-2 lead but the double-blue responded with a 9-0 on their way to a 20-15 advantage after the first quarter.
They opened the second frame on a 12-3 run that would build a double-digit edge that the opposition would be unable to crack.
The Bruin lead got as high as 29 in the third quarter, but they were out-scored 25-17 in the final stanza to bring the total margin down.
Denmark Mcdonald led the club with 20 points, while Khalid Abdel-Gabar (15), Anthony Loungs (13) and Orlando Palmer (13) also posted double-digit totals.
The club is now off until the end of the month when they play in Ryerson's National Invitational tournament from December 27-29. They will also host the Belair Direct Holiday Series on January 4.
Their OCAA West schedule kicks into high gear on January 21, when they host Mohawk.
Blue notes: After the West Division was won with only one loss in each of the past two seasons, all 10 teams will enter the winter break with at least two blemishes on their record.
