ST. BASIL STANDOUT TO JOIN THUNDERBIRDS SOCCER

SAULT STE. MARIE, Ont. - The Algoma Thunderbirds are pleased to announce that local midfielder Daniel Scarpino from St. Basil Secondary School has committed to join the men's Thunderbirds soccer program for the 2012 season.

Playing for Algoma University as a local student means a lot to Scarpino. "I'm blessed to have this opportunity to play for the Thunderbirds. Playing soccer at the next level has always been a goal of mine and to do so in my city is a dream come true. Representing Algoma University as a student athlete is something I'll take great pride in."

Scarpino will be enrolling in the liberal studies program at the University where he'll be studying General Arts and Science.

Scarpino will be the first player from St. Basil's to play for the Algoma University soccer team, however, if head coach Neil Ovey has his way, he won't be the last. "There is a lot of local talent, and we know that many of our athletes are looking for opportunities to extend their playing careers at the post-secondary level. We're so excited to be able to give them that opportunity at Algoma, and to have them help us to build a successful program."

In speaking of Scarpino, Ovey was full of praise: "Daniel is a dynamic midfield player and has a great enthusiasm for the game. We are delighted that he has committed to Algoma University."
