FIELD SET FOR OCAA WOMEN'S INDOOR SOCCER CHAMPIONSHIP
TORONTO - What began as a group of 16 teams has been paired down to an elite eight earning a berth to the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) Women's Soccer Championship.
TORONTO - What began as a group of 16 teams has been paired down to an elite eight earning a berth to the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) Women's Soccer Championship.
Four regional tournaments were held this past week, each consisting of four teams. The top two teams from each regional earned berths to the provincial tournament, beginning March 21.
In Pool A, the Humber Hawks swept the competition with a 3-0 record, winning the regional championship. Also advancing out of Pool A is the Fanshawe Falcons, who went 1-1-1. Fanshawe earned a berth to the OCAA championship on the strength of a 3-1 win over the Confederation Thunderhawks, who were eliminated from the competition with a 1-2 record. Also eliminated were the St. Lawrence Schooners (0-2-1) out of Brockville, Ont.
In Pool B, the Seneca Sting and Centennial Colts advance to provincials with identical records of 2-0-1. Fittingly, both teams played each other to a scoreless draw. Seneca outscored its opponents 9-0, compared to 7-1 for Centennial, giving the Sting the regional title. Eliminated from provincials were the Fleming Knights (1-2) and Algoma Thunderbirds (0-3).
The Sheridan Bruins took the Pool C regional title with a record of 2-0-1. They will be joined out of their group by the Conestoga Condors, who had a record of 2-1. Conestoga fell 4-0 in its meeting with Sheridan.
Despite losing just one game and allowing three total goals in three games, the George Brown Huskies (0-1-2) were eliminated from provincials, along with the St. Lawrence Sharks (0-2-1) out of Cornwall, Ont.
Finally, the Georgian Grizzlies won Pool D with a mark of 2-0-1. Also advancing to provincials are the Durham Lords with a regional record of 1-0-2. These teams battled each other to a 1-1 draw. Eliminated from the competition were the Redeemer Royals (1-2) and Sault Cougars (0-2-1).
Regional tournaments took place at the OSA Soccer Centre in Vaughan, Ont. with the exception of Pool D which was held at Redeemer University College Sports Complex in Ancaster, Ont.
The OCAA Women's Soccer Championship will take place at the OSA Soccer Centre in Vaughan, Ont. from March 21-22.
