WINDSOR, Ont. - Three men’s golfers shot an even-par 70 to take the clubhouse lead following Day 1 of the 2012 OCAA Golf Championships at the Roseland Golf & Curling Club in Windsor, Ont., hosted by St. Clair.
WINDSOR, Ont. - Three men's golfers shot an even-par 70 to take
the clubhouse lead following Day 1 of the 2012 Ontario Colleges
Athletic Association (OCAA) Golf Championships at the Roseland Golf
& Curling Club in Windsor, Ont., hosted by St. Clair.
Kurtis Lavery of St. Lawrence-Brockville,
Humber's Alex Dumais and Georgian's Colton
Kalkanis all lead the field with two rounds remaining.
Kavery could have earned a better fate with five birdies on the
day, but a quadruple-bogey on 18 cost him an opportunity at a
sub-par round, and the outright lead. Dumais and Kalkanis had two
and three birdies, respectively.
Hot on their tails are four golfers who shot 71. Fleming's
Cam Head, Seneca's Mitchel
Kennedy, Durham's Sean Perkins and
James Skrypec of Georgian all shot one-over
par.
Five other golfers are two strokes behind the leaders.
Matt Horton and Brennan Smith of
St. Lawrence-Kingston, Walker Arnott and
Cole Kent of Niagara, and Durham's David
Lang all shot 72. Dumais and Smith each earned bronze
medals at last year's championship.
With the strong individual performances out of the gate, the men's
team standings are just as tight. Six-time defending champion
Humber combined for a score of 291, holding a one-stroke lead over
St. Lawrence-Kingston, while Georgian and Durham are two shots
back. Niagara is four off the pace with a score of 295.
Defending OCAA women's champion Tiffany Albath of
Durham set the pace with an opening round 81, but she will need to
hold off a charge from St. Clair golfers if she wishes to repeat.
Heather MacKenzie is one stroke back, while
Jordan Schatz and Ashley Unrau
shot 85 and 87, respectively.
Not surprisingly, St. Clair leads all women's teams with a total
score of 167, three stokes ahead of two-time defending champion
Durham.
The tournament consists of three 18-hole rounds, weather
permitting. The male and female player posting the lowest gross
score through 54 holes will earn their respective individual
championship.
Men's teams consist of four or five golfers, with the top four
individual scores of each round contributing to the total team
score. Women's teams consist of two or three golfers, with the top
two individual scores of each round contributing to their total
score. Schools with the lowest aggregate of gross scores after 54
holes win the respective team titles.
Golfers are representing 15 Ontario college campuses, including
Boréal, Centennial, Confederation, Durham, Fanshawe,
Fleming, Georgian, Humber, Mohawk, Niagara, St. Clair, St. Lawrence
(Brockville, Cornwall and Kingston), and Seneca.
